Traveling is good for writing and bad for mixing. The setup that survives contact with real travel is a laptop, closed-back headphones, and a small MIDI controller — plus a deliberate split between work that needs a connection and work that doesn't. Do your generation, stem separation, and big downloads before you leave; save arranging, editing, and writing for the offline hours.
Three constraints shape everything: power, noise, and connection.
Power. Plugins that hammer the CPU drain a battery fast. Freeze or bounce heavy tracks before a flight and work with audio instead of live instruments.
Noise. A train at 70 dB of rumble hides your low end completely. You are not mixing bass on a train, and pretending otherwise wastes the session.
Connection. Hotel and airport Wi-Fi is fine for email and unreliable for uploading a 400 MB project. Assume you have no connection and treat any you get as a bonus.
Closed-back, over-ear, wired. Closed-back isolates enough to work in a noisy carriage; wired means no latency, no pairing, no charging. Bluetooth headphones are for listening back, not for playing in parts.
Learn one pair properly. A familiar mediocre pair beats an unfamiliar excellent pair every time.
A 25-key controller with a few knobs fits in a backpack and makes chord and melody work feel like music rather than mouse work. If you're going carry-on only, skip it — a laptop keyboard mapped to notes is workable for capture.
Only pack one if you're recording. A bus-powered two-input interface plus a dynamic mic turns a hotel wardrobe into a passable vocal booth: clothes on both sides, duvet behind you, mic pointed away from the window.

Make that easy:
- One folder, one habit. Every idea goes to the same place, named with the date and three words about the feel.
- Say the tempo out loud at the start of the memo, or tap it on the phone screen. Future you will not remember it.
- Record the room too. A market, a station announcement, a stairwell reverb — these become texture later, and a phone recording is good enough for a background layer.
- Do not judge on the road. Capture, label, move on. Sorting happens at home.
Set a rule before you go: one hour, one idea, no finishing. Travel sessions are terrible for finishing and excellent for starting, because you're away from your usual habits and hearing new rooms and new noise.
Come home with ten half-ideas and one plan for which two are worth real time. That is a good trip. Trying to complete a mix in seat 24B is not.
