Chord Progressions for R&B: Extended Harmony and Smooth Movement

R&B has the richest harmonic vocabulary in popular music. The chords are the genre.

Extended chords are the baseline

Where pop uses triads and lofi uses sevenths, R&B routinely goes to ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths.

The added tones aren't decoration — they're the sound. A Cmaj9 has a completely different emotional weight from a C major triad.

Voice-leading is the technique

This is what separates R&B harmony from someone playing extended chords.

Voice-leading means each note in a chord moves the shortest possible distance to the next chord, or doesn't move at all. Played this way, the harmony changes colour without any voice jumping — which is what "smooth" means.

Example: Cmaj9 voiced E–G–B–D moving to Am9 voiced E–G–B–C. Three notes stay identical; one moves a step. Same two chords voiced in root position would jump all over the place and lose the effect.

Practical rule: find the notes the two chords share, keep them where they are, and move the rest minimally.

Progressions

The descending ii–V chain: Dm9 – G13 – Cmaj9 – Am9

The neo-soul loop: Fmaj9 – Em7 – Dm9 – Cmaj9

Chromatic bass movement — the bass walks by semitone while chords shift above: Cmaj7 – C7/Bb – Fmaj7/A – Fm6/Ab

Modal interchange — borrow from the parallel minor for one chord: Cmaj9 – Fm9 – Cmaj9 (the Fm9 is borrowed and instantly sounds sophisticated)

Reharmonisation

The R&B move: keep the melody, change the chord underneath.

A melody note of C can sit over:

• C (as the root)
• Ab (as the third)
• F (as the fifth)
• Bbmaj9 (as the ninth)
• Am7 (as the flat third... and so on)

Same note, four different emotional colours. This is why R&B vocals can hold one note while the harmony moves beneath them — one of the genre's signature effects.

Getting there

Learn to voice chords without the root (the bass has it), keep your voicings in a comfortable middle register, and move as little as possible between chords. Those three habits produce most of the sound.
