What is quantize?
To quantize is to move recorded or drawn notes onto the nearest point of a rhythmic grid, such as every 16th note, so their timing is exact. In Veena, the free AI DAW with a producer built in, quantizing is a sentence: tell CoProducer what should be tight and what should breathe, and it moves only those notes.
What is quantize actually moving?
Three settings decide the result:
- Grid: the note value notes snap to, such as 1/8, 1/16 or triplets.
- Strength: how far each note travels toward the grid. At 100% it lands dead on; at 50% it moves halfway and keeps some of the original feel.
- Swing: delays every second grid step, turning straight 16ths into a shuffle.
Some quantizers also snap note lengths. Humanize is the opposite move: small offsets that make programmed parts feel played.
Choosing the grid
In 4/4, where one beat is a quarter note:

When not to quantize
Leave rubato piano, vocal-led parts and ghost notes alone, or quantize them gently. A groove that pushes and drags by a few milliseconds is often the whole point, and locking every note at 100% is the fastest way to make a live take sound programmed. Tighten a part with CoProducer
By hand: open a MIDI clip's Piano Roll, choose a snap setting (None, Bar, Beat, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6 or 1/8 Beat) and every note you draw or drag lands on it. By asking: tell CoProducer "quantize the keys to 1/16 at 70% strength" and it tightens that part, while "add human feel to the hats" does the reverse. What quantize strength should I use?
Around 60–80% suits played parts like keys and bass: notes move most of the way to the grid but keep some push and pull. Programmed drums in EDM and trap usually want 100%. In Veena, tell CoProducer both, as in 'quantize the bass to 1/16 at 75%', and it tightens just that part.
What's the difference between quantize and snap?
