What is EQ?
EQ (equalization) boosts or cuts chosen frequency ranges of a sound — lows, mids or highs — to shape its tone and make room for other parts in a mix. Free in your browser, Veena puts an 8-Band EQ on every clip, and CoProducer knows what "too muddy" or "more air" means.
What is EQ doing to each frequency range?

Filter shapes
- Bell (peaking): boosts or cuts around one frequency; the Q sets how wide.
- Shelf: lifts or lowers everything above a point (high shelf) or below it (low shelf).
- High-pass: removes everything below a point, the classic fix for rumble on vocals and guitars.
A vocal EQ in three moves
- Cut the lows below about 100 Hz, with a high-pass or a deep low-shelf cut, to clear rumble and handling noise.
- Dip 2 to 3 dB near 300 Hz if the voice sounds boxy.
- Add a gentle high shelf, about +2 dB from 10 kHz, for air.
Do it in context rather than solo: a vocal that sounds thin on its own often sits perfectly against the band.
Shape the tone in Veena
Add the 8-Band EQ from any clip's FX tab. Band 1 is a low shelf (20 to 500 Hz, starting at 100 Hz); bands 2 to 7 are bells starting at 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 5 kHz and 8 kHz; band 8 is a high shelf starting at 12 kHz. Every band moves 18 dB up or down with a Q from 0.1 to 10, and an output gain trims the result. Rather describe the sound? Should I boost or cut with EQ?
Cut first: removing mud or a harsh resonance usually sounds more natural than boosting everything around it, and it keeps headroom. Boost gently, 2 to 3 dB with a wide Q, when a sound needs presence or air. Veena's 8-Band EQ gives each band up to 18 dB either way, and CoProducer can make the call for you.
What frequency range sounds muddy?
